Empowering Future Leaders: Colne Valley Students Take Action for Girls in Jordan

6 May 2025

At Great Heights Academy Trust, we believe in developing well-rounded young people with the confidence, compassion and leadership skills to make a real difference in the world. A powerful example of this ethos in action can be seen at Colne Valley High School, where a group of Year 10 students are leading an ambitious campaign to raise £15,000 for girls living in poverty in Jordan.

The initiative was sparked by the Fierce and Fearless leadership programme – delivered by Shaun Weatherhead – which challenges students to build resilience, develop emotional intelligence and lead with purpose. Inspired by the programme and a moving presentation from Ridwana Wallace-Laher, a former Colne Valley teacher now working with the charity Islamic Help, the students were determined to take action.

Shaun Weatherhead said: “These Year 10 girls are remarkable. They’ve attended weekly sessions developing their leadership skills and their ambition and commitment to give back to others and make a difference is incredible.

Improving the lives of others is something close to their hearts and it’s been amazing to witness them channel their passion into meaningful action. They’re proving that ordinary young people can be powerful forces for good and when they lead with purpose, integrity and work together they can achieve extraordinary results.”

Four students – Effy Ellam, Poppy Haigh, Lola Sykes and Holly Sewell – have formed a leadership team called HELP, an acronym of their names. They are now leading the charge in planning fundraising activities, creating a campaign brand, and engaging their school and local community.

Linthwaite Football Club, where many Colne Valley pupils play, has also joined the effort by providing volunteers and footballs to send to Jordan, further highlighting the strength of local partnerships and the impact of shared values.

Linthwaite Football Club secretary James Carter said: “We’re tremendously proud to be part of such a transformative initiative. At Linthwaite FC we’re passionate about changing young people’s lives through the power of football, but this goes well beyond the pitch. Seeing these students unite for such an important cause with such energy, dedication and compassion is what community spirit is all about.

“We have over 150 players girls and boys who attend Colne Valley High School so supporting this terrific cause lays at the heart of what we aim to do for all youngsters and families locally.”

Mrs Bobby Murray, Associate Assistant principal at Colne Valley High School, added: “This initiative has not only strengthened their leadership and teamwork skills but has also deepened their understanding of global social issues. Seeing them take ownership of this cause, with such empathy, kindness and determination, has been wonderful – and we’ve just started.”

At Great Heights, we are proud to see our students not only achieving academically but also stepping up as global citizens and emerging leaders – ready to make a positive impact both now and in the future.
