A culture of collective responsibility

At Great Heights, collaboration sits at the heart of sustained educational excellence. We encourage everyone within our trust to see themselves as both givers and receivers of support. This culture of collective responsibility ensures that all our schools benefit from a network of shared expertise, encouragement and challenge.

Sharing what works to support others

We believe that strong partnerships are key to long-term growth – not just within our own schools, but across the wider system.

We actively engage in reciprocal collaboration with other trusts and academies, through governance roles, collaborative audits and the mutual sharing of best operational practice, such as in HR and digital infrastructure. By sharing expertise and capacity, we help strengthen provision across the communities we serve.

As a Department for Education-designated English Hub, we support schools regionally with phonics audits, early reading training and bespoke literacy support. Our nationally recognised Fixing Fluency project helps schools close the reading gap and build fluency and comprehension across all stages. Alongside this, Great Heights Research School plays a leading role in mobilising research findings, helping schools embed evidence-informed practice and drive sustainable improvement.

Beyond literacy, we work with other MATs, teaching school hubs and sector partners to deliver impactful leadership development and teacher training. Our AA Teamworks SCITT trains the next generation of teachers in partnership with placement schools across West Yorkshire – many of whom go on to teach and lead within our trust.

We also contribute to cross-sector collaboration through Great Heights Partner Provision, our specialist service delivering high-quality education for pupils who are unable to attend mainstream school due to health or medical needs. The Provision works closely with schools and health professionals to ensure continuity of education and, where possible, support reintegration through flexible, personalised teaching and a strong focus on inclusion.

True to our vision of achieving excellence together, every partnership – whether with schools, local authorities, businesses or community groups – is built on a shared commitment to enriching learning, raising aspirations and securing better outcomes for all children and young people.

Driving change at a national level

Great Heights has played a key role in shaping the national education landscape through the collective expertise and commitment of its team. Working in partnership with the Department for Education and contributing to national initiatives, our Trust has supported system-wide improvement and informed national policy and practice.

Great Heights specialists have provided system leadership to many schools, supported numerous academy conversions and contributed to nationally recognised school improvement programmes. This includes the design and delivery of training on metacognition through the Research School Network, support for early reading through the English Hub, and leading work on effective implementation and teacher development.

Together, these efforts have helped to raise standards well beyond our own schools and earned recognition at the highest levels of government. In recognition of her services to education, our CEO Amanda Bennett was awarded an OBE in 2021.

Your dedication and expertise have been instrumental in driving substantial improvements and achieving positive outcomes for schools and trusts throughout the region. Your team’s commitment to excellence and attention to detail have not gone unnoticed. The seamless coordination and timely delivery of the programme have significantly contributed to its success.

Vicky Beer CBE, DfE Regional Director for the North West

This outward-facing work continues through a wide range of local, regional and national collaborations, including commissioned projects with the Education Endowment Foundation. Our leaders contribute to key sector forums and strategic boards, including the ESFA Steering Group, English Hub Council, Calderdale Strategic Board and Kirklees Partnership Board. Across Kirklees, Leeds, Calderdale and Rochdale, our trust teams also deliver school improvement and inclusion support in both mainstream and specialist settings, including SEMH schools and through the Medical Needs Partnership.
